Installed a 4x4x8 ft silent viewing booth with a large two-way (transparent) mirror on a busy corner in Long Beach, CA. A sign on the door states, "Step inside and experience the silence of watching. Please knock before entering." Depending on the light/time-of-day a passerby either sees their own reflection or inside the structure; the opposite is true for the participant inside.
The allure of voyeurism and the idea of lack are at work in this piece. In an effort to heighten our awareness of sight and sound, I invited listening in self-reflexive silence and watching behind a hidden window. However, from day to night power shifts for the participant inside from watcher to watched. 2007
